Home Insurance
Essential Or An Expensive Extra? Unfortunately for many, home insurance has become essential and something which may well have been used on more than one occasion.
While there are many different items and situations which can be used as a basis for a claim on your house insurance, the most common occurrences are :
Theft
Crime has become a major problem in many areas of the country, and something which may well get worse before it gets better. While violent crime is still very uncommon in home robberies, the thought of someone being in your home, and looking through your possessions can cause major distress.
It is essential that your insurance cover is at a sufficient level to allow you to replace all items stolen, but it is also very important that you check the small print. It my not bring back that cherished item, but a compensation payout will allow you to replace the bulk of items stolen
Acts Of God
While not a common occurrence in the UK prior to the turn of the century, flood damage to homes has increased, and the experts are expecting further problems in the years ahead. A lack of funding for some of the country’s flood barriers and some very unique weather patterns have been at the root of the problem.
Much of the UK as seen some form of flooding in 2007, with some areas in the north experiencing more than one wave of floods this year alone. Unfortunately there will be issues with regard to house insurance for some people in these “flood” areas, with many insurance companies not offering competitive quotes. There has been speculation that the government will step in to assist, as they do in the United States, but nothing has yet been formalised.
Conclusion
Those who believe that home insurance is not required in this day and age may well be in for a shock at some point, never has this insurance been more essential to the vast majority of UK citizens, not only to protect your personal belongings, but also your property itself.
While on the surface home insurance should be fairly straight forward and simple, it can often be complicated with single items having to be “added” to the list of items covered, which can actually increase your premiums substantially. Historically many people had been afraid to claim off their insurance for fear of pushing their premiums even higher, but that seems to have changed with many home owners making full use of the coverage, and compensation available.
This increased claim culture has seen premiums push higher and higher, with more and more situations and items excluded under the “small print”. Never just compare home insurance quotes on price alone, check the small print, the exceptions and what is actually included - it may change your choice all together.
